Very exciting! We asked the Society for Science for funding to add radiation sensors to our inventory, and they said “Yes!”

We will add ten of the Vernier Radiation Monitor sensor, which is good for alpha, beta, and gamma nuclear decay, to our inventory for you to borrow for your class. We will also add ten of the Vernier Quantitative Color Sensor, which is good for visible colors and UVB, to our inventory for you to borrow for your class.

See, we want your students to be able to distinguish between different forms of radiation, because it can be confusing that electromagnetic photos are called “radiation” and nuclear decay particles are also called “radiation” and then the high-energy gamma photons from nuclear decay are ALSO called “radiation.” We think that some brief, hands-on experience might help YOU, the teacher, to make this clear to them, your students.

The grantor, Society for Science, is located in Washington, D.C., and if you’d like to apply for your own STEM Action Grant for your school, please see https://www.societyforscience.org/stem-outreach-programs/stem-action-grants/
